Hawaii receiver Justin Clapp is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing a procedure to repair a collapsed lung.
Clapp, UH’s starting right slotback, suffered the injury Saturday when he was struck on the rib-cage area by a Utah State defender. X-rays showed two fractured ribs.
When Clapp had a second series of X-rays on Monday, it showed that a lung had collapsed 25 percent and that blood had accumulated in the chest cavity. He was hospitalized, then underwent a procedure to repair the lung. A tube was inserted to clear blood from the chest cavity.
Associate athletic director Carl Clapp said the tube will remain in his son through today.
Carl Clapp said his son “is getting a little better.”
He added: “He’ll be trying to find ways to get back out there again.”
Surgery for Laurel
Left tackle Clayton Laurel said he will have surgery this week on his broken left arm.
After reviewing video, Laurel said he probably suffered the injury when he became entangled with a Utah State player.
“I was kind of down about it,” Laurel said. “Stuff happens.”
Shuffling wide receivers
With right wideout Royce Pollard unable to practice Tuesday because of injuries to his left knee and ankle, Trevor Davis moved from left wideout to Pollard’s spot.
Darius Bright, Joe Avery and quarterback David Graves took reps at left wideout.
Bright missed the past two games because of a variety of injuries. But he made an acrobatic catch during passing drills.
Graves split time between wideout and quarterback. Starting quarterback Bryant Moniz did not practice because of undisclosed ailments. But head coach Greg McMackin said Moniz will practice today and start in Saturday’s game against Nevada.
“I’m doing whatever they ask,” said Graves, who was a receiver for two years in high school before moving to quarterback as a senior. “I’m going to take all of the reps at quarterback, and be ready. If they need me (as a wideout), I’ll do that, too.”
Place-kicker Kenton Chun, who did not play against Utah State after aggravating tendinitis in his left knee, said he is feeling better and expects to be available this week.
