Search for hiker turns up corpse
The body of a man was found at about 4:30 p.m. Monday in Haiku, Maui, where firefighters had been searching for a missing hiker, police said.
On Monday morning, Maui firefighters resumed searching the rugged terrain of Maliko Gulch for 29-year-old Tristan Brennan, missing since Friday. The search was suspended at 6:05 p.m. Sunday due to darkness. The man’s girlfriend reported him missing on Friday. He was last seen walking along a pineapple field between 3 and 5 p.m.
Air and ground searches were conducted Sunday from the ocean to Kaluanui Road.
Details on the location and condition of the body were unavailable, and police declined to say whether the body was that of the missing man.
Suspicious envelope draws investigation
A suspicious envelope found Monday near a cafe at the University of Hawaii at Manoa prompted officials to evacuate students in nearby buildings.
At about 7:30 a.m. police responded to a report of a suspicious package in the loading dock of Paradise Palms Cafe, near Hamilton Library. Students were evacuated from the cafe, library, Moore Hall, Agricultural Engineering Institute and St. John Plant Science Laboratory.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Fire Department spokesman, said the envelope was examined, and "it was determined to not be a danger to the community." At noon all affected buildings were reopened.
Firefighters snuff blaze on trolley
A trolley caught fire shortly after 8 p.m. Monday at Dillingham Boulevard and Kalihi Street.
Firefighters had the fire controlled at 8:10 p.m. and extinguished by 8:30 p.m.
