‘Five-0’ lures 11.71M viewers, wins key demographic
"Hawaii Five-0" fared well in an hour that lacked scripted dramas Monday night, and scored its highest viewer ratings since its second-season premiere, according to Nielsen ratings released Tuesday by CBS. The show drew 11.71 million viewers Monday night. When the premiere aired in September, it drew 12.19 million viewers. Last week it drew 10.32 million viewers.
"Five-0" typically finishes behind ABC’s "Castle," which this week was replaced by an episode of "20/20." Even so, the newsmagazine drew 12.4 million viewers. Over at NBC, the news magazine "Rock Center with Brian Williams" drew 3.87 million viewers. But "Five-0" was the clear leader in its key demographic: adults ages 18-49. The cop drama drew 3.3 percent of the total viewing audience and 8 percent of those watching TV at the time.
Cultural center announces new president
Carole Hayashino has been named president and executive director of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii by its board of directors, effective Jan. 9.
Hayashino will succeed longtime President and Executive Director Lenny Yajima Andrew after the annual JCCH New Year’s Ohana Festival, at which the center showcases its programs, classes and other aspects of the Japanese culture in Hawaii in a free public event. Andrew announced in August her intention to retire.
Hayashino is vice president for university advancement at California State University, Sacramento, where she oversees external relations encompassing private giving, alumni relations, university marketing and publications. In addition to other community service activities, Hayashino also has served as associate director of the Japanese American Citizens League in San Francisco and was involved in the national effort for redress and reparations for Americans of Japanese Ancestry interned during World War II.
Hawaii cancer society gets $3.5M donation
The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation has donated $3.5 million for Hawaii’s first American Cancer Society Hope Lodge. American Cancer Society Hawaii Pacific said the gift is the largest donation it has ever received.
In return, the lodge — a free "home away from home" for patients who must travel from home for cancer treatments — will be named the American Cancer Society’s Clarence T.C. Ching Hope Lodge.
The 19-room facility at 251 Vineyard St. will provide an estimated 460 cancer patients and their caregivers up to 6,935 nights of free housing annually — in hopes of reducing the financial and emotional burden of cancer and allowing patients to focus on recovery. The lodge includes private rooms and baths and a community kitchen, laundry facility and living area. The American Cancer Society has launched a $15.5 million capital campaign to build the lodge.
To donate, email hipac@cancer.org or call 595-7500. The society, which operates 31 lodges nationwide, aims to start construction by early 2014.

Lloyd Haraguchi is being recommended for the position by a committee of board directors guiding the Land Development Corp., a state agency created by the Legislature earlier this year.
Haraguchi worked for the estate and later became senior asset manager for the estate’s successor, The James Campbell Co. He is no longer with the company, but is on the board of Malama Learning Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii. A full biography was not available Tuesday.
The Land Development board is due to vote on the committee recommendation at the agency’s next meeting Monday.
