University of Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen will soon add a new line to his list of accolades.
A four-time conference coach of the year, Coolen will be recognized for his exploits as a player when he’s inducted into Brockton (Mass.) High School’s Athletics Hall of Hame today.
Coolen, a 1976 graduate, was a standout in baseball, football and swimming for the Boxers.
"Back when you’re playing you don’t think down the road you’re going to get recognized for such an honor," Coolen said. "I was flattered. It just brought back a lot of memories."
The induction comes a week after the Rainbow Wahine wrapped up their fall practices with an exhibition win over UH-Hilo on Maui. The team will work on its conditioning and individual skills leading up to the start of practice on Jan. 9, with the season opener set for Feb. 9 against Seattle.
UH pitchers Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby were dominant in four exhibition games against Division II competition — three against Chaminade and the UH-Hilo game — giving up just one run on three hits while striking out 46 over 26 innings between them.
Freshman catcher/first baseman Kayla Wartner was among the top newcomers, going 7-for-12 with eight RBIs and three home runs in the exhibitions. With Wartner handling some of the catching, the coaching staff gave sophomore Sharla Kliebenstein, who started every game behind the plate last season, an extended look in right field.
