The Hawaii women’s basketball team hopes a long night doesn’t translate into a long weekend.
The Portland Pilots dominated an undermanned UH squad in the second half in dealing the hosts an 82-64 loss on the first night of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Despite shooting 50 percent from the field, UH (1-1) came up well short in its first game against Division I competition this season. Untimely turnovers and a 38-26 rebounding disparity led to the Pilots attempting 67 shots to UH’s 40.
"I find it really impossible to win a game when you get beaten in every category," said Wahine coach Dana Takahara Dias. "We failed to make some major adjustments at halftime and execute them. I thought Portland played a wonderful game."
Portland (2-1) broke open the game in the final 10 minutes with a flurry of fast-break baskets. The Pilots of the West Coast Conference collected 11 steals and outscored UH 21-6 off of turnovers.
"We just gotta get back on defense," said sophomore forward Kamilah Jackson, who had UH highs of 14 points and eight rebounds. "We (gave up) a lot of wide-open layups. Also, on offense we’ve gotta minimize our turnovers and get it inside more."
The going gets no easier today. UH continues the tournament against San Diego State (2-0), which knocked off No. 18 DePaul 82-74 in the tournament opener on Friday.
The Wahine and Aztecs tip off at 2 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A crowd of 619 was taken out of the game by the midpoint of the second half as the Pilots wore out the Wahine, who were down to nine active players. Nearly as many — six — were inactive in sweats on the UH bench.
Sophomore wing Shawna Kuehu was a scratch for a undisclosed injury after being projected to return to action during the week. Sophomore guard Sydney Haydel started in her stead and scored 10 points, but had four turnovers.
Senior forward Breanna Arbuckle scored 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting and dished five assists, but had five turnovers. Starting point guard Alissa Campanero remained scoreless for the season, but had six assists against three giveaways.
Kuehu’s slashing ability was clearly missed. Portland, which defeated UH 66-61 in Oregon last season, stubbornly clung to a 2-3 zone that the Wahine struggled to penetrate.
UH drew to within 62-53 with under 10 minutes remaining on a Jackson free throw, but the Pilots answered with a 10-2 run in which they repeatedly punished the Wahine with fast-break layups.
Guard Natalie Day led the Pilots with 19 points on 9-for-15 shooting.
