While Honolulu police continue to investigate the fatal traffic collision in which a 21-year-old Waianae man apparently drove the wrong way on the H-2 freeway and slammed into an oncoming truck, the family of the truck driver, who died in the collision, expressed its grief in a public statement.
According to police, Lance Miyashiro, 40, was killed Saturday morning when his Toyota Tacoma truck collided with a white BMW that had errantly entered the freeway from the Ka Uka Boulevard offramp. The truck overturned and was struck by a Jeep Liberty SUV driven by a 58-year-old Mililani man.
Miyashiro was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the BMW, identified by friends as Jameson Yong, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. The driver of the SUV, who has not yet been identified, was taken to an area hospital in serious condition.
The collision occurred around 2:20 a.m.
In a statement released to the media, Miyashiro’s family expressed thanks to those who had offered their sympathy.
"It is an understatement to say that Lance will be deeply missed," the message read. "There is no way of replacing the hole that is left in our hearts for a son, brother and friend. Seeing how many lives Lance has touched is such a comfort in this difficult time. Though the days have been shrouded in sadness, the night is a bit brighter thanks to a star returning to its place in the heavens."
Friends said Miyashiro was returning home to his home in Wahiawa after working a shift at the Mai Tai Bar in Ala Moana Center. Miyashiro also worked at Mililani Pets.
Police said all three men involved in the incident appeared to be wearing seat belts. It is not yet known whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors.
