Stanley powers U.S. to win over China
Hawaii’s Clay Stanley led the U.S. to a 25-14, 25-23, 25-21 win over China on Sunday in the first round of the men’s FIVB World Cup in Kagoshima, Japan.
Stanley, Team USA’s captain, had a match-high 17 points.
The U.S. fell to Brazil on Monday, 25-17, 25-18, 16-25, 25-16. Stanley was held to seven points, on three aces, three kills and a block.
The top three teams at the end of the 15-day tournament earn berths at next year’s Olympics. The U.S. is ranked fourth in the world.
Western Washington keeps BYUH winless
John Allen scored 26 points, and Rory Blanche had 24 points and 10 rebounds as Western Washington beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 88-69 on Monday in Bellingham, Wash.
The Seasiders, who advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament final last year, dropped to 0-4.
Brady Hurst and Jet Chang scored 16 points each, and Junior Ale added 15 for the Seasiders. Ale dished out five assists, while Chang and Bracken Funk each pulled down six rebounds.
Western Washington improved to 6-1.
