Mental health exam ordered for 18-year-old
HILO » A mental health examination has been ordered for the former student charged with making threats against security staff at the Hawaii island campus of Kamehameha Schools.
Jeremy Costa is charged with first-degree terroristic threatening. Police say he allegedly made threats via Facebook that included references to the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting rampage and that "rent a cops must die."
Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Wednesday the court has received one report from a Hilo psychiatrist and that Costa had not yet been seen by two other mental health professionals.
The judge granted the defense’s request for a bail reduction to $10,000 cash from $100,000.
Kamehameha Schools has been granted a temporary injunction to keep Costa away. The 18-year-old was expelled from the school in August.
Man to serve 16 years for rape of girl
A Kauai man must serve at least 16 years in prison for raping a 14-year-old girl as his girlfriend and children slept nearby, the Kauai County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday.
Nelson Olshefski, 36, was convicted of the 2008 rape and received a 20-year sentence in October 2010. The Hawaii Paroling Authority determined on Oct. 24 that Olshefski should serve at least 16 years of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. His minimum term will expire on Sept. 6, 2025, just before his 50th birthday.
The Prosecutor’s Office said Olshefski took the girl to a spare bedroom and raped her as his girlfriend and children slept. The girl, who was a family friend, reported the assault to her family.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Arin argued before the Paroling Authority that Olshefski’s prior criminal record, which includes theft, family abuse and criminal property damage convictions, shows he has little regard for others.
The defense said Olshefski took responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty and apologizing.
