1 killed, 3 injured in crash on Schofield
A soldier assigned to the 25th Infantry Division was pronounced dead at the scene and three other soldiers were transported in serious condition to the Queen’s Medical Center after a two-vehicle crash at Schofield Barracks early Saturday morning, an emergency medical services supervisor said.
The three injured include two 19-year-old men and one 19-year-old woman. The age and sex of the deceased person will be released after family has been notified, the Army said.
So far, the cause of the crash is unknown, said Maj. David Bolender, 25th Infantry Division spokesman.
Emergency medical services said there were no known witnesses other than those involved.
At least two people were ejected from their vehicle and one of the cars rolled over into an em- bankment.
A call came in to emergency medical services from the military at about 12:41 a.m., the supervisor said.
An investigation is ongoing and details will be released after its finished, Bolender said.
Waikiki high-rise blaze begins in garage
A fire at a residential building in Waikiki caused about $60,000 in damage Saturday morning and forced about two dozen residents to evacuate.
The fire started in the third floor of the parking garage of the 21-floor Waikiki Lanais condominium at 5:18 a.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Rick Karasaki.
He estimated two dozen people were evacuated from the building, at Liliuokalani Avenue and Tusitala Street, as a part of standard procedure, and were allowed to return about 7:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.
He said the cause was not determined, but fire investigators found the fire originated in a pile of old mattresses and a chest of drawers behind a truck.
After the fire broke out, it spread to the nearby truck and melted its gas tank. The gas from the truck caused the fire to spread to surrounding cars, Karasaki said.
Five engines, two ladder rescue trucks and a battalion chief were dispatched to the blaze.
"There were a lot of resources dedicated to this fire," Karasaki said.
Father foils suspect in theft, kidnapping
A 35-year-old Kailua man was arrested Friday after stealing a vehicle with an 11-year-old girl inside in McCully, police said.
The girl’s father, 40, left the vehicle running with his daughter inside about 9:15 a.m. When the suspect tried to take the vehicle, the father was able to stop him and hold him until officers arrived, police said.
Officers arrested the man on Nanea Street on suspicion of car theft and kidnapping. He was later released pending investigation.
