Trail run championship at Kualoa Ranch
Some of the best trail runners in the world, including Hawaii’s Lee Saltonstall, will tackle the challenging terrain of Kualoa Ranch in Sunday’s XTERRA Trail Run World Championship.
More than 1,800 runners are expected for the event, which includes the 21-kilometer championship course, 10- and 5-kilometer runs open to the public, a 2-mile adventure walk and a 1K keiki race. Races begin at 9 a.m.
Late registration is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Waikiki Beach Walk. Fees range from $25 to $55; the keiki walk is free.
Saltonstall, 64, has won two age-group world titles.
Defending women’s champion Sally Meyerhoff, ninth overall last year, was killed in a cycling accident in March while training for the Ironman World Championship. She will be remembered with a moment of silence prior to Sunday’s start.
Max King was the overall winner last year, finishing in 5 hours and 56 minutes. For information, go to xterraplanet.com.
