Hawaii’s free-throw shooting went south and thus the Rainbow Wahine basketball team began its East Coast trip with a close loss at Army on Thursday.
UH’s 10 misses in 18 attempts from the free-throw line were among the glaring statistics in a 55-51 loss to the Black Knights at Christl Arena in West Point, NY.
"That’s something you can’t have an off night on, our free throws," UH head coach Dana Takahara-Dias said.
"Overall we just did not play smart when we needed to and Army really capitalized on our mistakes."
UH (1-7) took a 27-20 lead into halftime despite going 4-for-11 from the line in the first half. After Army (6-2) battled back to take the lead with 14:51 left in the game, there were three ties and neither team led by more than four points the rest of the way.
UH took its final lead on a layup by Sydney Haydel with 3:45 left, but Army’s Jen Hazlett hit a 3-pointer to put the Black Knights up 50-48.
UH closed to within a point on two occasions and had a shot to tie the game in the final seconds trailing 54-51. But freshman Alissa Campanero’s 3-pointer was off the mark and Army secured the rebound and the win.
Campanero hit three 3-pointers on her way to a season-high 15 points. Forward Kamilah Jackson posted her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Breanna Arbuckle finished with a game-high 13 rebounds.
Hazlett led Army with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Molly Yardley added 16 points and Anna Simmers finished with 11.
Coming close to begin the longest road trip in the program’s history didn’t offer much consolation.
"I look at it like this, there’s no excuse not to play your best game at any gym regardless of if it’s at Stan Sheriff or close to 5,000 miles away," Takahara-Dias said.
The Wahine play at Columbia at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
