Kono tied for the third at LPGA qualifying final
Punahou alum Stephanie Kono dropped into a tie for third after Friday’s third round of the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, at Daytona Beach, Fla.
Kono shot a 3-over-par 75. At 3-under 213, she is seven shots out of first. The field of 139 is cut to the top 70 and ties after today. The top 40 and ties after Sunday’s round receive 2012 LPGA membership, with the top 20 getting full status.
Hawaii’s three other golfers need to rally to make the cut. Ayaka Kaneko (76—226) is tied for 78th. Shayna Miyajima (79—233) is tied for 118th and Kimberly Kim (78—246) is 137th.
Wilson tied for 19th at halfway point
Kaneohe’s Dean Wilson is tied for 19th halfway through the PGA Tour’s Final Stage qualifying, in La Quinta, Calif. Wilson shot 71 for the second straight day. At 7-under 209 after three days, he is six shots off Will Claxton’s lead.
There are 172 players in the field. The top 25 and ties get PGA cards.
Long Beach State beats BYUH men
Larry Anderson scored 16 points and T.J. Robinson had 12 points and 14 rebounds as Long Beach State (4-3) beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 79-43 on Friday in a men’s basketball game at Long Beach, Calif. Jet Chang scored 16 for the Seasiders (1-5), who were outscored 47-15 in the second half.
Viloria fight available on pay-per-view
WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria’s defense against Giovanni Segura next Saturday will be available in Hawaii on pay-per-view.
Viloria (29-3, 16 KOs) will be making his first defense of the title he won over Julio Cesar Miranda in Hawaii in July. It is his third title reign.
The fight from Manila will be aired on Oceanic channel 260 at 4 p.m. in Hawaii. Call 643-2337 to order.
