Son saved, but father drowns while diving
A 48-year-old man apparently drowned Friday while diving at night in waters off Kahana Bay. The man was skin diving with his son when they got caught in a current at about 10 p.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. James Todd.
The son was able to make it to shore but the father was taken out to sea by the current, Todd said.
A Honolulu Fire Department helicopter dropped rescue personnel into the water and workers were able to retrieve the man in about 10 to 15 feet of water 200 to 300 yards offshore, Todd said.
Rescue teams aid 3 after boat capsizes
Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department and city life guard personnel joined forces Saturday afternoon to rescue three men off an overturned boat in waters off the Honolulu Airport Reef Runway.
The 15-foot fiberglass recreational boat capsized about a mile offshore shortly before 12:30 p.m., said Coast Guard Lt. Leigh Cotterell.
Ocean safety lifeguards on personal watercraft retrieved three men, ages 51, 44 and 43, and transferred them to a Coast Guard boat, Cotterell said. From there, they were brought ashore at Keehi Lagoon, he said. The three men, who were wearing life jackets, were not injured.
