North Kohala crash kills man
A 25-year-old man died in a single-vehicle accident early Saturday morning in North Kohala.
Hawaii County firefighters responded to the crash near the mile-nine marker on Akoni Pule Highway at about 2:12 a.m., according to a news release.
A vehicle traveling north rolled over several times after it drifted off the road.
The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, firefighters said. The vehicle was found about 40 feet from the highway and about 100 feet from where it left the road.
County holds $7.5M surplus
Hawaii County has almost $7.5 million in unused fuel taxes and county officials want permission to spend it.
Deputy Planning Director Brandon Gonzalez told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald the money is left over from completed projects dating from the late 1990s. Gonzalez called the original cost estimates "reasonable," adding, "Sometimes with prudent management, you realize savings."
Hanapepe cuts off green waste
Green waste is no longer being accepted at the Hanapepe transfer station, Kauai County announced Friday.
Service is expected to resume in about two weeks when the volume of green waste is reduced to authorized levels.
Meanwhile, green waste can be taken to the Kekaha landfill or the Lihue transfer station. The Hanapepe station is still accepting scrap metal, appliances, propane tanks, used tires, used noncommercial motor oil and oil filters and used cooking oil.
