Braekhus tops Hawaii’s Kupihea
Cecilia Braekhus stopped Hawaii’s Kuulei Kupihea by TKO at 57 seconds of the 10th and final round on Saturday to retain the WBC, WBA and WBO world welterweight titles at the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki.
Braekhus improved to 19-0 with five knockouts, while Kupihea fell to 7-2, losing for the first time in her last eight fights.
Referee Daniel Van de Wiele stopped the fight midway through the final round after Kupihea took a series of clean shots to the face, including a right-left hook combo that had Kupihea stumbling against the ropes when it was called.
Arizona trips Brigham Young-Hawaii
Erica Barnes scored 24 points and added 11 rebounds to lead Arizona past Brigham Young-Hawaii 78-61 in the final game of the Hukilau Invitational women’s basketball tournament in Laie on Saturday.
Candice Warthen scored 22 for the Wildcats (7-1).
Taylor Mann had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Seasiders (0-4). Danna Lynn Hooper scored 15 points and Shayla Washington added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals for BYUH.
UH’s Pawid is tennis player of the month
Hawaii’s Jamie Pawid was named the Western Athletic Conference tennis player of the month for November.
Pawid defeated Stanford All-American and ITA preseason No. 12 Stacey Tan 6-3, 6-1 on Nov. 21.
Pawid is 3-3 in singles this season and 5-3 in doubles with partner Katarina Poljakova.
UH baseball camps start soon
Registration is ongoing for the University of Hawaii winter baseball camps Dec. 19-28 at Les Murakami Stadium.
A two-day camp for pitching or catching and infielders is available Dec. 19-20. An all-day hitting camp on Dec. 21-22 and a three-day camp covering all phases of the game on Dec. 26-28 is also open.
Fees are between $100 and $300, depending on the specific camp.
