Kaichi Kaya is shown at the center with a group at a monument to O-Jizosan, a Japanese guardian spirit, above the Bamboo Ridge fishing spot in Southeast Oahu around the mid-1940s. Jizo statues were placed at dangerous fishing and swimming sites to warn and protect fishermen.
