Max King of Bend, Ore., took the lead midway through the course and beat Petr Pechek by more than a minute to win his fourth straight XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch on Sunday.
King finished the 13.6-mile course in 1 hour, 21 minutes, 27 seconds. Pechek, of the Czech Republic, finished in 1:22:56 and Ben Bruce (1:23:01) of San Diego was third. Thomas Rivers Puzey, a Brigham Young-Hawaii student, was fourth in 1:25:45.
Arritola breaks through
Morgan Arritola, a member of the USA cross country skiing team from Ketchum, Idaho, won the women’s race in 1:33:00, beating Lucy Smith of Canada (1:37:46).
Cindy Anderson of Kailua was the first Hawaii finisher, placing fourth with a time of 1:37:46.
King and Arritola both earned $2,000 and a round-trip ticket from Hawaiian Airlines.
