Despite missing the final three football games because of a broken right ankle, Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz compiled enough numbers — and respect — to be named to the 2011 All-Western Athletic Conference first team.
Weakside linebacker Aaron Brown, who endured knee and leg ailments this season, was the only other Warrior named to the first team.
The WAC’s eight head coaches made the selections.
UH wideout Royce Pollard, offensive lineman Brett Leonard, defensive tackles Kaniela Tuipulotu and Vaughn Meatoga, middle linebacker Corey Paredes, and strong safety Richard Torres were named to the All-WAC second team.
In 2010, Moniz led the nation in passing yards and touchdown passes. Before suffering the ankle injury in the first quarter of the Warriors’ 10th game this season, Moniz threw for 2,773 yards and 22 touchdowns while being intercepted five times. He is the third UH quarterback to amass 10,000 passing yards.
Brown has 103 tackles in 12 games, including 13 backfield stops and 4.5 sacks.
"Nobody is tougher, absolutely nobody," UH associate head coach Rich Miano said of Brown.
"He has the kind of focus and physicalness that Hawaii people want in a defense."
Despite leg injuries, Pollard caught 71 passes for 1,011 yards and eight touchdowns.
Leonard proved to be versatile. He rotated at center during training camp, started the first eight games at left guard, then moved to left tackle.
Tuipulotu and Meatoga anchored the defensive front. Their value was not reflected in statistics. Each faced double-team blocks on nearly every play.
Paredes led the Warriors with 107 tackles.
Torres had three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
