NOTEBOOK
Kahuku hoopsters lose Beatty
Just one week after Kahuku won a state football championship, its boys basketball team took a big hit, presenting it with an instant challenge.
Kahuku senior Bronson Beatty, the speedy 6-foot-2 defensive back who also played basketball, suffered an MCL injury while trying to block a punt during Friday’s HUB Goodwill Senior Bowl football game.
“That’s a big loss. He would’ve given us six to 10 points a game, but his rebounds and his defense are what we’ll miss,” Kahuku coach Darren Johnson said. “He’s long, he’s fast. That changes a lot for us.”
Beatty is hoping to rejoin the team by the playoffs.
Pahoa stuns again
Tremors near the east rift zone of the Big Island aren’t all volcanic in nature.
Some of the rumbling is coming from the hardwood. Division II Pahoa made a grand statement on Saturday with a stunning 51-49 win over D-I Kamehameha-Hawaii. First-year head coach Eric Saito enjoyed the win, but not the byproduct.
“Unfortunately, we might be losing focus,” the longtime assistant coach said. “It’s only preseason. I’d rather win the last six games than win the first six.”
Because the Big Island Interscholastic Federation is saving on travel costs by playing a geographical-oriented East-West regular season, No. 10 Pahoa will get to play KS-Hawaii, a perennial hoops powerhouse in the league, two more times.
Lady Lunas roll on
Lahainaluna won the Seabury Hall Wahine Basketball Classic over the weekend and has won 10 of its 13 nonconference games so far.
Pretty good for a team that lost its top player, Maiki Viela, to graduation. Viela is now at Gonzaga.
“The girls bought into the team concept, team defense, team offense,” Lady Lunas coach Todd Rickard said. “I’m kind of pleased with where we’re at.”
The No. 6 Lunas defeated Lake Oswego 50-42 in the tourney final on Saturday.
