On Monday, the Hawaii football team lost its head coach. On Tuesday, it got a commitment from a former 5-star cornerback.
Justin "J.T." Turner reaffirmed a conditional oral commitment he made to the Warriors on Sunday, saying Greg McMackin’s departure has no bearing on his decision.
"Not at all," said Turner, who completed a recruiting visit to UH on Sunday. Before leaving, Turner and McMackin had a lengthy discussion.
"I’m pretty sure he knew he would be gone, but he didn’t want me to feel that vibe," Turner said. "He spoke highly about the program and the players."
Turner reaffirmed his commitment after learning associate head coach Rich Miano was named interim head coach. Turner said defensive line coach Tony Tuioti was a factor in his decision. Tuioti is the point recruiter.
"I’ve been in contact with coach Tuioti for almost a year now," Turner said. "He’s been supportive, and I appreciate that. I feel there’s a vibe in that friendship."
As a high school senior in 2009, Turner received a 5-star ranking from Scout.com. Rivals.com named him as the top prospect from Ohio that year.
Raised in Massillon, Ohio, Turner committed to Michigan, the alma mater of his favorite player, Charles Woodson.
After a delay in receiving approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse, Turner redshirted in 2009. Deciding Michigan was not the right fit, he requested — and received — a release from his football scholarship. He enrolled at West Virginia for a semester, then transferred to Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College in January.
Turner is 6 feet 2, 200 pounds, and is capable of running 40 yards in under 4.5 seconds.
During his visit to Hawaii, he was reunited with high school friend, UH cornerback Mike Edwards.
"Other than the loss (to Brigham Young), the guys played well," Turner said. "And the scenery out there is absolutely beautiful. The food is great, too. I told Mike, ‘I want to eat rice with every meal now.’ "
Turner said Miano gave him a surfing lesson off Waikiki.
"That was the first time I went surfing," Turner said. "I caught four waves."
Turner said he will sign a letter of intent next week Wednesday, then enroll at UH in January.
"I’m excited," Turner said. "My family is excited. I can’t wait to be a Warrior."
