Police have released a video of City Councilman Tom Berg arguing loudly and belligerently with Secret Service personnel outside a Waikiki hotel on Nov. 12 after being denied re-entry into an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation reception.
"You! You! have an attitude man, and you know it," said the 47-year-old West Oahu councilman, staring and pointing his finger at a Secret Service agent who stopped him from entering the Hale Koa Hotel at 10:15 p.m.
The Honolulu Police Department released Wednesday a DVD copy of the video in response to a Star-Advertiser request.
Berg’s argumentative and disruptive behavior at City Council and neighborhood board meetings has come under criticism recently by a fellow city councilman and the chairman of the Waipahu Neighborhood Board.
A bicycle police sergeant turned a helmet camera on after Secret Service Agent Rob Savage, who oversaw Secret Service operations during the APEC summit in Honolulu, went to talk to Berg after Berg was denied re-entry by agents manning a security checkpoint outside the Hale Koa Hotel.
Agents denied Berg re-entry to retrieve his cellphone, left under his seat with his invitation, because he failed to show proper credentials. Berg said he was not issued an APEC badge, only the invitation, and that his name could not be found on a guest list.
(Berg admits to drinking but denies being drunk, although police said he was intoxicated and that they smelled alcohol on his breath and clothes.)
A female agent tries to calm him down, saying, "Sir we understand."
Berg, whose voice becomes high-pitched and loud, says, "When somebody lies to you and says I was never in the event, you need to listen clearly.
"I gave them my credentials and I said I am a city councilman," he said. "I was sitting behind Lt. Gov. Schatz, and I said I got it on camera, and the guy said, ‘You were never here.’"
Berg said Wednesday that he showed agents his City Council identification, maintained a pleasant demeanor and asked whether one of the agents could escort him back, and that was not on the video.
After returning by cab to the Kahala Hotel where Berg’s car was parked, Berg was observed by a Secret Service agent who told police Berg was stumbling, unable to walk straight and apparently drunk. Berg allegedly asked him: "Are you one of those federal f—— pigs?" a police report said.
Berg said Wednesday night he believes the comments about his being drunk are a smear tactic by federal agents who wrongly refused him re-entry.
"I think that there’s always two sides to a story, and unfortunately one of the citizens who was shot by one of the agents (in an unrelated case) can’t tell his side of the story … I tried to defend what I thought was my ability to do something very simple" … "to retrieve my phone."
Berg said he has heeded the criticism and taken corrective measures to his approach.
The local Secret Service office declined to comment on Berg’s statements.
