Apparent drowning victim is ID’d as Texan
The Honolulu medical examiner identified the 40-year-old man who died Sunday morning in an apparent drowning on the North Shore as Lloyd Early of Texas.
Early was swimming with a woman in waters off Ke Iki Beach on the North Shore when they got into trouble and called for help.
Bystanders brought the woman safely to shore. When they returned to help Early, he was floating unconscious, officials said.
The bystanders performed CPR until Honolulu Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived.
Early was taken in critical condition to the hospital, where he died. An autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of death.
Fire damages Roy’s restaurant in Ko Olina
Roy’s restaurant in Ko Olina suffered an estimated $85,000 in damage during an early morning kitchen fire Monday.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Fire Department spokesman, said a gas leak in the supply line ignited by a pilot light sparked the fire in the restaurant’s second-floor kitchen shortly before 5:30 a.m. at 92-1220 Aliinui Drive.
The fire was confined to the kitchen. It was brought under control within an hour. Seelig said the fire investigation has classified the fire as "unintentional."
33 nabbed in Hawaii County for DUI
Hawaii County police arrested 33 motorists for drunken driving in the week ending Saturday, the department said. Fourteen of the drivers were involved in crashes, the department said Monday.
The South Hilo district had the most, with 12, followed by Kona with eight. So far this year there have been 1,380 drunken driving arrests, down 3.8 percent from 1,435 for the same period last year.
