Choices are few if you hate vog
That vog from Kilauea crater on Hawaii island sure can be annoying, especially for people whose bodies are sensitive to the toxic haze, resulting in eye irritation, coughing and other uncomfortable symptoms.
There oughta be a law!
Oh, wait, that wouldn’t work. How can you enforce pollution regulations against an active volcano?
Nor would it be wise to offend Madame Pele. If Hawaii’s fire goddess wants to emit toxic fumes to the point of driving us all from the islands, who are we to try and stop her?
If the vog truly doesn’t stop, loving it or leaving it might be the only alternatives.
UH, McMackin vow to be nice
On the gridiron, NCAA referees call it "flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct," but a judge presumably would be the arbiter in the event that the University of Hawaii or Greg McMackin talks stink about the other in the aftermath of his departure as the UH Warriors football coach.
The football rule provides for the ejection of whoever taunts or curses the other. However, the "non-disparagement" clause in the seven-page settlement between UH and McMackin doesn’t spell out the ramifications of what it calls "disparaging or negative remarks."
Both McMackin, who already has been ejected, and the university should remain gentlemanly to avoid more money coming to play in altering the $600,000, rather than the $1.1 million, for the "retired" coach.
