Goulsby’s 27 points lift Kaiser over Kahuku in OT

Jerry Campany

Darcey Goulsby scored 17 of her 27 points from the line and the Kaiser girls basketball team turned back Kahuku 53-50 in overtime at Kaiser on Saturday night.

Goulsby, who was 17-for-21 on free throws, hit two charity shots with 13.6 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime, then hit four straight in the extra period to go with a nifty turnaround jumper to open the scoring.

She scored seven of her team’s nine points in the final 4 minutes.

"Automatic," Kaiser coach Simon Bitanga said. "That’s Darcey. We shoot hundreds of free throws every day. We know games are going to come down to this and Darcey is a senior; she should be excited to be at the line with the game on the line."

Goulsby made her first 10 attempts in a game in which 41 fouls were called, helping the Cougars go 28-for-37 on the free ones. Kahuku was 12-for-23.

The Red Raiders fought back from double-digit deficits twice in regulation, and nearly negated Goulsby’s effort in overtime. They found themselves down eight points with under a minute left, but Fia Tailele-Latu hit a free throw and Leilani Paselio scored on a nifty move before Tailele-Latu splashed a 3-pointer to cut the margin to 52-50. Goulsby hit one more free throw and Jaelynn Kaio-Scott’s long-range attempt missed at the buzzer.

"What you saw in overtime, that’s our game," Bitanga said. "Give all the credit to Kahuku. They have a great team, but we didn’t play the way we expect until overtime, when we tightened up the defense and started running the ball."

Kahuku was held scoreless for the first 3 minutes of overtime, giving them something to work on.

"When we start playing to not lose instead of playing to win, we get in trouble," Kahuku coach Scott DeSilva said. "I think that’s why we can fight back so easily — the girls never quit."
