Kylie Maeda scored 12 points, including two free throws with 4.6 seconds left, as No. 2 ‘Iolani escaped with a 38-35 girls basketball win over third-ranked Punahou Saturday night.
Maeda’s foul shots stretched the lead to three points; Punahou had a chance to tie the game but couldn’t get an open shot. Reina Furuya’s desperation heave from 38 feet away missed at the buzzer.
The Raiders improved to 4-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and 8-2 overall. Junior Alex Masaquel had a team-high nine rebounds to go with eight points. Sophomore Jade Botelho also scored eight points.
Punahou (6-1 overall) lost its first ILH game after three victories, including an overtime win over Kamehameha on Wednesday.
This time, the Buffanblu cut a 14-point deficit down to one in the final minute before losing. Mysha Sataraka led Punahou with eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
A crowd of about 300 watched at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
"It’s a long season. We still have to play them two more times," Raiders coach Eddie Maruyama said.
"We did a good job coming out early with the tempo," Maeda said. "But we can work on maintaining our lead because we were up by at least 10. (Punahou) picked up the pressure. We do good when we’re calm. As long as we relax, we’re fine."
Down 16-13 in the second quarter, ‘Iolani’s fullcourt press and halfcourt man defense locked down. The visitors got a trey from Pua Kahalehoe, and Maeda swished a 3 before the halftime buzzer to give ‘Iolani a 21-16 lead.
The Raiders were in control in the third quarter, zooming to a 33-19 lead on a three-point play in the low post by Masaquel, a tough scoop shot by Maeda, and back-to-back buckets by Botelho.
Punahou tightened its defense to score 13 points in a row, keeping ‘Iolani’s explosive fast break in check. The Raiders were scoreless for more than 8 minutes while Punahou got a 3-point bomb and a 12-foot bank shot from Demi Coolen. After Sataraka hit a jumper from the elbow off a feed from Coolen, the Buffanblu were within 33-32 with 2:55 remaining.
Maeda then came through with a pull-up baseline jumper and Masaquel hit a foul shot for a 36-32 ‘Iolani lead.
Turner Wong’s mid-range jumper and a free throw by Sataraka helped Punahou cut the lead to 36-35 with 17.5 seconds left. After Wong forced Maeda into a turnover on the inbound pass, Punahou had the ball and a chance to take the lead with 12.5 seconds to go.
However, Sataraka was stripped of the ball by Kahalehoe on a baseline drive and Maeda sank two foul shots with 4.6 seconds left for a 38-35 lead. Punahou called consecutive timeouts before Sataraka’s pass to midcourt was deflected out of bounds by Masaquel with 3.1 seconds to go.
The Buffanblu were out of time outs, and on the inbound pass, Sydney Fanoga caught the ball at the top of the key and couldn’t find an open teammate. With nobody coming to get the ball from Fanoga, a center, she passed to Furuya near midcourt for a last-chance shot.
"Our execution was OK," Maruyama said. "We just told them, ‘Stay disciplined. Protect the 3-point line.’ "
The Raiders had seven of their 13 turnovers in the final quarter. Punahou finished with 17 giveaways.
‘Iolani shot 30 percent (13-for-44) from the field, including an unusually low 20 percent from the 3-point arc (2-for-10). The Raiders also shot 59 percent from the foul line (10-for-17).
Punahou shot 38 percent from the field (13-for-34) and 57 percent from the line
(8-for-14). The Buffanblu outrebounded the Raiders 29-26, but the visitors had 10 offensive caroms.
Punahou’s next game is at Sacred Hearts on Tuesday. ‘Iolani will visit Mid-Pacific on Thursday.
