Pedestrian killed in early-morning incident
A 67-year-old man died in a pedestrian traffic accident in Waipahu early Sunday morning, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said. The accident happened at about 4:30 a.m. on Hiapo Street near Kuhaulua Street.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police closed the Hiapo Street bridge between Kuhaulua and Paiwa streets for more than two hours while traffic investigators examined the scene of the accident.
Man dies after being punched in Kalihi bar
Police opened a second-degree murder investigation after an unprovoked assault in a Kalihi bar early Sunday morning led to the death of a 26-year-old man.
According to police, the victim was punched in the face by another man and fell backward. He was knocked unconscious when the back of his head hit the ground.
The incident occurred at about 2:05 a.m.
Emergency Medical Services personnel took the victim to the Queen’s Medical Center, where his condition deteriorated.
He was pronounced dead at 3:11 a.m.
Police identified a 21-year-old man as the suspect, but an arrest had not been made.
Home in Ewa badly damaged by blaze
Fire caused an estimated $300,000 damage to a single-family home Saturday on Makule Road in Ewa.
Firefighters arrived at 7:09 p.m. and had the fire under control by 7:16 p.m. The blaze was extinguished by 7:58 p.m.
According to Honolulu Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Gary Lum, the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen and ultimately consumed about half of the structure.
No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $250,000 to the structure and $50,000 to its contents.
