B&Bs should accommodate all
If vacation rental owners are going to continue making the case that theirs are legitimate businesses, they must side with the decision of a lesbian couple to sue over being refused a room in a Hawaii Kai bed-and-breakfast.
According to the complaint, Diane Cervelli and Taeko Bufford of Los Angeles came to visit a friend with a newborn in 2007 and were turned away by Aloha Bed & Breakfast, being told by proprietor Phyllis Young that it was because their lesbian relationship was at odds with her religious beliefs.
Hawaii Revised Statutes 489-3 bars discrimination in public accommodations "on the basis of race, sex, including gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, color, religion, ancestry, or disability."
People can associate privately with whomever they want. But if it’s a business arrangement, rules are rules, and this one seems pretty clear.
At UH, football can be a career
New Hawaii football coach Norm Chow never suited up at the University of Hawaii during his college days, but enough former players for the Warriors have gone on to earn their salaries along the sidelines at the college level to put Manoa on the map for coaching credentials.
The Wall Street Journal reports that 13 former UH football players now are employed as head coaches, assistants or coordinators in Division 1 college football. Topping the gridiron-as-classroom list is Iowa at 16, while Florida State, Auburn and Brigham Young are tied at 15 each. Next in line with Hawaii with 13 former players turned into mentors are Colorado State, Florida and Washington State.
