The Punahou Invitational did not get its name because Punahou invites competitors it can run over. It just seems that way.
The Buffanblu boys basketball team blew out Maryknoll 58-36 in the championship of its tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday, its third straight rout of a solid team. No. 2 Punahou (7-0) beat Walnut Grove 85-33 in the first round and Kahuku 69-50 in the second.
"I don’t really look at margin," Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said. "We still have a lot to work on; things are not as tight or clean as we want it to be."
Things were still plenty tight and clean against No. 3 Maryknoll (5-1), which was playing without point guard Danny Danbara, who has a broken hand. Even without their primary ballhandler and the 28 minutes he is usually on the floor, the Spartans handled Punahou’s press with aplomb. Maryknoll kept 6-foot-9 big man Tobias Schramm in the backcourt to receive the inbounds pass and get rid of the ball over the top of each double team he saw. But that strategy took him out of the offense, holding him to seven points. He was 1-for-8 from the field, two of the misses on 3-pointers.
Half the time the credit went to Punahou big DeForest Buckner, a 6-foot-8 all-state defensive end in football who treated Schramm like a run of the mill left tackle. Buckner played limited minutes, but when he was on the floor he outmuscled Schramm and the rest of Maryknoll’s paint protectors for 13 points. Schramm made Buckner miss more than he wanted to, but the Punahou post was always there to clean up his messes.
"One of our main goals was to make him run and make him tired," Buckner said. "When I was on him I was fronting him trying to make sure he didn’t get the ball as much."
Buckner provided the dagger to begin the second half when he got free for the only dunk of the game to move the margin to 11. By the time he left the floor the Buffanblu were up 17 and able to cruise to the finish. He spent much of the time in the comfort of the bench while Schramm labored to get Maryknoll back into the game. Buckner was named the tournament’s MVP, with Schramm joining him on the first team. Other members of the all-tournament team were Malik Johnson of Punahou, Maryknoll’s Austin Gaskins, Kawehena Johnson of Kahuku and Kalaheo’s Josh Ko.
"(Buckner) is a senior now; he has learned how to play big in big games," Matsuda said. "There are not too many big guys in this league and (Buckner) knows that (Schramm) is a really good player, so he wanted to do well."
Schramm stood up to the pounding and looked fresh even in the waning minutes, but his mates did not. Maryknoll got scoring from six players, while 11 Buffanblu boys got into the scorebook. Punahou had its first full-scale shift change 41/2 minutes into the game, and its starting five scored nine of its 29 points in the first half and 24 of its 58 in the game.
"I don’t count us as having five starters," Matsuda said. "We have 10-15 starters. A guy like Kupono (Fey), he was a part-time scorer for us last year and leads us in scoring sometimes. He’s a volleyball player, so he has a good nose for the ball."
Fey led all scorers with 14 points, 10 of them in the second half when he outhustled the tired Spartans. Gaskins led Maryknoll with 10 points, six of them from the line. Maryknoll was 20-for-28 on free throws, while Punahou was 2-for-3.
The Buffanblu will leave for San Diego to play in the Holiday Classic, where they will play top seed Poway in the first round on Tuesday.
