The owner of an automated teller machine is offering a $2,000 reward to anyone with information about its theft from the Aloha Stadium swap meet on Wednesday.
Jason Barnhill, vice president of ATM Unlimited, said the machine disappeared from the parking lot near Section 12, on the mauka side of the stadium closest to H-1 freeway, sometime between 10:36 and 11 a.m. during a busy holiday shopping day.
"Somebody saw something," Barnhill said. "It’s the Wednesday before Christmas. There were plenty of people out there. People saw something. They just don’t know what they saw."
Barnhill speculates that the ATM got carted off in the bed of a pickup truck with an electronic gate lift given how quickly the incident took place.
"Someone went out there in broad daylight and picked up a 500-pound machine, threw it in the truck and rode off with it," he said.
At 11, the ATM sent him an automatic notification that its cassette portion had been either removed or dislodged. By the time Barnhill arrived at the parking lot location 18 minutes later, all that was left was the blue 5-by-5 pop-up tent that had been shielding it from the sun and two dangling tie-down straps.
"And no ATM," he said.
The Honolulu Police Department is asking anyone with information to call the Pearl City District’s Burglary and Theft Detail at 723-8809. Police are following up on some leads but could use others, said HPD spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter.
Barnhill said stadium officials told him the roughly 10 cameras in the parking lot failed to pick up a vehicle leaving with the machine.
He would not say exactly how much cash was in the machine, calling it only "a substantial amount of money."
ATM Unlimited has a subcontract under Centerplate, which manages the stadium swap meet. It typically places five ATMs around the parking lot during swap meets.
Barnhill said his company provides ATMs at a number of Oahu events throughout the year. While he’s heard of the machines of other ATM companies being stolen, this is the first time it has happened to one of his, he said.
The company has since made adjustments to safeguard against further thefts. He declined to give specifics.
