Zane Johnson got another prize for his breakout week.
A day after being named to the all-tournament team for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, the Hawaii senior guard was tabbed the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for leading UH to the DHC consolation championship.
The 6-foot-6 Phoenix native had 18 points and six rebounds in a 65-62 first-round loss to Auburn, then helped UH rally from a 15-point deficit to stun then-No. 14 Xavier 84-82 in overtime in the consolation semifinals. He capped off the week with a season-high 27-point effort in a 75-68 win over Clemson in the DHC consolation championship on Christmas.
For the tournament, he averaged 19.7 points, kicking up his season average to 15.5, and shot 38.7 percent (12-for-31) on 3-pointers. It was the second career weekly honor for Johnson. UH made it consecutive weeks receiving the award after junior center Vander Joaquim was honored on Dec. 19.
According to UH records, the Rainbow Warriors received the WAC award on back-to-back weeks on two previous occasions, the most recent happening in 2001-02 (Mike McIntyre and Predrag Savovic).
