President Barack Obama and his wife visited the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor on Thursday after a quick stop at Island Snow, a shave ice stand in Kailua, where he attracted a throng of about 60 people.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited the memorial at 5:26 p.m., pausing for a moment of silence in the shrine room, where the names of 1,177 Arizona crew members who perished in 1941 are inscribed. They were accompanied by Adm. Robert Willard, commander of U.S. Pacific forces, and his wife, Donna.

The Obamas dropped white and purple orchids in the water over the sunken battleship.

At Island Snow the crowd gathered at 3:35 p.m in the parking lot and on the sidewalk in front of a row of adjacent shops. They held cellphone cameras over their heads to try to get a photo of the president, who was wearing a Chicago White Sox baseball cap and sunglasses.

"We’re going to see the president!" Byeong Yoon said to his daughter, 6-year-old Isabelle, as they watched.

"For real?" his daughter said.

About 15 people in the presidential party got shave ice and returned to motorcade vehicles, which left at 3:58 p.m.

Earlier, at 7:38 a.m., Obama went for a workout at the gym at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay. The motorcade left the base at 9:16 a.m. and returned to the Kailua rental where the Obamas are staying.

At 11:33 a.m. the motorcade returned to the base, where Obama, his family and friends spent the early afternoon at Pyramid Rock Beach, a White House official said. Shave ice followed the beach.
