Kahuku rode its inside game to beat Roosevelt 61-53 in overtime at Roosevelt on Friday night.
The Red Raiders made their living in the paint, and overtime was no different.
Fia Tailele-Latu began the extra period with a post move and missed, but Kalynn Latu was there to clean it up to give Kahuku the first advantage, 52-50.
Kahuku ruled the paint in the first half, struggled in the second when Roosevelt pressed and re-established it in overtime.
"I knew we had the advantage there," Kahuku coach David Te’o said. "I wanted the girls to take whatever they want in there; if they take it away we can always adjust."
The brief lead didn’t last long, though, as Roosevelt went with its bread-and butter. Shana Kawakami squared up and hit a long 3-pointer to swing it the other way. Unfortunately for the home team, it would be the last basket they would score.
Kahuku went straight back to the post game, getting a nifty turnaround jumper from Pati Anae to retake the lead, 54-53.
After each team turned it over once, the Red Raiders switched from a man defense to a 3-2 zone to slow Roosevelt’s long-range shooters. Only they didn’t commit to it, giving Kawakami and Kira Arruda open looks that didn’t go down.
"I think we got some good looks at the 3," Roosevelt coach Hinano Higa said. "But we were looking to make the extra pass and get an even better look. Our little girls battled against their big girls. We are just trying to keep our composure, be a little more consistent and a little more poised."
Kahuku went to the line from there, with Anae and Leighlani Paselio each stepping up to hit two shots to give Kahuku a 58-53 lead. Fia Tailele-Latu went 1-for-4 to keep Roosevelt in the game, but after a long 3-pointer by Kawakami missed, Paselio calmly put an end to the game with two more free throws.
"We made them when we needed to," Te’o said. "Even in regulation we missed some, but we made them when we needed to."
Paselio led all scorers with 29 points, nine of them from the line in the second half. Anae added 12. Chelsea Wong battled Kahuku underneath all night to lead Roosevelt with 12 points, and Shanice Kawakami added 11, all in the first half.
Roosevelt forced overtime after trailing the entire second half when Krystle Chung made a post move with 1:17 left to cut the margin to one, then hit the first of two free throws a possession later to tie it. Both teams missed potential game-winning shots.
