Doctor sentenced to 5 months for assault
A Wahiawa doctor has been sentenced to five months in jail on his conviction of assaulting his former wife.
Wesley Young was also ordered by Circuit Judge Michael Wilson on Friday to serve five years’ probation for the second-degree assault of his then-wife at their Aiea Heights home in March 2009.
City Deputy Prosecutor Adrian Dhakhwa said Young head-butted the woman, breaking her eye socket.
Young has a previous conviction for pleading guilty in 1998 to sexual contact with an 8-year-old girl.
He was placed on five years’ probation in that case but permitted to continue practicing medicine as long as another adult was present when he treated minor patients.
Complaints spur session on surf event rules
A meeting will be held Thursday to gather more testimony on new city rules for surf contests on the North Shore.
The meeting is being held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mission Memorial Building Conference Room, 550 S. King St., following complaints made by attendees of a meeting Nov. 16 at the Sunset Beach Recreation Center. A majority of about 40 people who attended complained that they weren’t given adequate notice to prepare and testify on the proposed Department of Parks and Recreation rules.
The city decided to hold Thursday’s meeting to give more concerned community members the opportunity to testify on the proposed rules, which include new permit application procedures and conflict resolution process.
The proposed surf contest rules are available at www1.honolulu.gov/parks/proposedshorewatereventrules.pdf.

Geothermal group offers final analysis
The Geothermal Working Group sponsored by Hawaii County will present its final report at 2:30 p.m. today at the mayor’s lanai at the County Building, 25 Aupuni St., Hilo.
The group’s interim report said geothermal power has the potential to provide the minimum electricity demand on Hawaii island.
According to a county news release, the report includes an analysis of technical data and expert testimony providing convincing rationale to develop local renewable energy plants and shift away from the county’s dependence on petroleum-fueled generators for base-load electricity.
Geothermal Working Group Co-Chairman Wally Ishibashi will present the report, and Mayor Billy Kenoi will provide supportive comments, according to the news release.
