Alan Matsui insists there is no secret.
Even as the Sacred Hearts Lancers found a way — again — to keep Kiki Robertson under wraps, Mid-Pacific had just enough for a hard-earned 40-33 girls basketball win Wednesday night at Dorothy Macy Nobriga Gym.
A crowd of about 100 saw the visiting Owls improve to 2-5 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (4-9 overall) with a patient, balanced attack.
“This is a frustrating season with wins and losses, but it’s a rewarding season as far as our players,” MPI coach Wes Masuda said. “Defensively, they’re starting to understand.”
Sophomore Mikaela Limper scored seven of her 14 points during a key third-quarter run. Robertson finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Robertson scored 13 points when the teams met a month ago at Mid-Pacific, a 47-32 Owls’ win. But she’s been unstoppable at times, scoring 66 points in two games against ‘Iolani.
“Kiki’s a good player. Our team hung together,” said Matsui, the Sacred Hearts coach. “You saw how many layups we missed? When you’re young, you never know what’s going to happen.”
Sophomore Celina Pagan hit four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points to lead the Lancers (0-7), a team heavy with freshmen and sophomores. The Lancers shot 30 percent from the field (12-for-40) and were outrebounded 31-16, but stayed close with gritty man-to-man defense. Anjela Kim had just four points, but seemed to be everywhere defensively, clogging the lanes, grabbing loose balls and tipping passes with her long arms.
“Sacred Hearts is scrappy. Alan runs a good group. They always play hard,” Masuda said.
Robertson didn’t start after not feeling well before the game. She entered with 4:26 left in the first quarter and scored the next five points to spur an 8-0 run that gave the Owls a 10-4 lead.
After Robertson dished a pass to Camille Ganahl for a layup late in the second quarter, MPI led 14-7 going into the break. The Lancers closed to 16-12, but the visitors went on a 14-6 run for a 30-18 lead early in the fourth period. The Lancers got within 32-26 with 3:19 left, but couldn’t pierce through that margin.
