Chaminade men edge HPU 68-65

Waly Coulibaly and Matt Cousins each scored 16 points as Chaminade beat Hawaii Pacific 68-65 in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game Thursday at Neal Blaisdell Arena.

Lee Bailey, who finished with 13 points, hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to put Chaminade up three.

The Sea Warriors missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Labrent Chappell scored 18 points to lead HPU.

Chaminade is 4-5 and 2-0; HPU is 6-5 and 1-2.

BYU-Hawaii men topple Hawaii-Hilo 81-63

Jet Chang scored 29 points, and Junior Ale had 14 points and 14 rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Hawaii-Hilo 81-63 in a PacWest men’s basketball game Thursday in Laie.

Zachary Wilde had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Vulcans.

BYUH is 5-6 and 2-0; Hilo is 6-4 and 0-2.

HPU women overwhelm Chaminade

Paris Gravely scored 26 points, and Mana Hopkins added 20 points and 10 rebounds as Hawaii Pacific beat Chaminade 88-55 in a PacWest women’s basketball game Thursday at Neal Blaisdell Arena.

Taiyande Huskey had 14 points and Melody Ladrido contributed 10 for the Sea Warriors, who made 35 of 68 field-goal attempts, including 12 of 25 from 3-point range.

Glacen Florita scored 16 points, and Dianna Zane and Kelly Costello each added 10 for Chaminade.

HPU improved to 8-5 and 2-1, while Chaminade dropped to 0-8 and 0-2.

Earlier in the day, HPU’s Hopkins was selected the PacWest Player of the Week after guiding the Sea Warriors to an 87-59 win over St. Ambrose (Iowa) on Dec. 19.

Hopkins, a 5-foot-10 senior forward, had 28 points and 12 rebounds against St. Ambrose. She was 11-for-16 from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range.

Shimizu leads Hilo women over BYUH

Kirsten Shimizu, a 5-foot junior guard, tossed in 21 points, including four of five 3-point shots, to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 72-59 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii in a PacWest women’s basketball game Thursday in Laie.

Hillary Hurley, making all 10 of her free throws, added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Vulcans, who are 6-5 and 3-5.

Shayla Washington had team highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Seasiders, who dropped to 1-9 and 0-2.
