Club starting travel basketball league
The Spalding Club House, part of the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, is sponsoring a travel basketball league beginning Jan. 28.
Play is on Saturdays with age groups of 7-9, 10-12 and 13-up. Teams will be bussed to various Boys & Girls Club sites, including Kailua, Ewa Beach, Waianae, Nanakuli and Spalding in Honolulu.
Registration fee is $25, which covers travel, T-shirt and referees. All skill levels are welcome.

Bicycle skills and safety class
Frank Smith and Dr. Robin Brandt, two of Hawaii’s top cycling instructors, are offering Traffic Skills 101, a skills and safety class for smart bicycling in Honolulu beginning later this month.
The course includes discussion on cyclists’ rights and responsibilities under Hawaii law, where to ride on the road, what clothes to wear for safety and comfort, how to fix a flat and other general routine maintenance.
The 10-hour course is split over two Saturdays, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, from 1-6 p.m. There are 5 hours of in-classroom instruction at Kapiolani Community College and 5 hours on the road.
Cost is $75, or $55 for Hawaii Bicycle League members.

State boxing coming up
Amateur boxers from five islands are expected to compete in the Hawaii State/Regional Open Boxing Championships Jan. 13 and 14 at Palolo District Park gym.
There also will be non-tournament bouts, including several that will feature national champion Haley Pasion and Lisa Ha, ranked No. 3 in her weight class nationally.
Bouts begin at 7 p.m. next Friday, with the Jan. 14 finals starting at 6:30 p.m.

Aloha Run readiness series starting
Sunday’s Bob & Ron’s 5K is the first in a three-race series designed to prepare runners for the Kaiser Permanente Great Aloha Run on Feb. 20.
The series, sponsored by the Mid Pacific Road Runners Club, also includes the Harold Chapson 8K on Jan. 22 and the Johnny Faerber 10K on Feb. 5. Cost for the series is $30 for MPRRC members, $60 for non-members. The fee for single events varies.
Packet pickup for Sunday’s race is Saturday at the Running Room, 819 Kapahulu Ave., from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Race-day entry is $30.
Sunday’s race begins at 7 a.m. at the Monsarrat Avenue entrance to the Waikiki Shell parking lot.
