The Kaimuki Bulldogs are so good, they make pink, green and yellow look good.
With nothing at stake in the final regular-season standings, the No. 6-ranked Bulldogs got 15 points from Ashley Savusa and 14 points from Keana Paez in a 51-37 win over Roosevelt on Wednesday night.
A sometimes cranky home crowd of about 500 saw Kaimuki, which has donned pink shoes over the past few games, finish the regular season 11-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association. The Bulldogs had already clinched first place and an opening-round bye, but the ferocity and precision of Wednesday night’s win was of postseason quality.
“We’ve improved a lot,” Savusa said. “We found our weakness and worked on it. Now we’re playing together.”
Defensively, the Bulldogs’ matchup zone left Roosevelt’s sharpshooters with hardly an open look. Roosevelt shot 2-for-15 from 3-point range.
“Kaimuki really did a good job defensively. They match up and they talk a lot with each other,” Roosevelt coach Hinano Higa said. “We had a hard time shooting the ball.”
Senior guard Dejah Fa‘asoa showed no signs of an ankle injury suffered during the ‘Iolani Classic. She finished with 11 points, and Shantaeus Ramos-Dias had nine to round out a balanced attack.
“I’ve always stressed to them, we’re always going to play together,” Kaimuki coach Mona Fa‘asoa said.
Kira Arruda had 10 points and Chelsea Wong added six points and nine rebounds for Roosevelt (7-4), which already had a playoff berth sealed. The Rough Riders, who pushed Kaiser to the limit in a close loss three nights earlier, kept this game close for a half. Kaimuki’s ability to control the tempo and the paint were simply too much.
Fa‘asoa’s last-second coast-to-coast drive for a lefty layup gave the ’Dogs a 24-18 lead at the half. They went on a 9-0 run to open the second half, sparked by a 3-point bomb and an easy layup off an inbounds pass from Fa‘asoa.
After opening the lead to 33-18, Kaimuki never let up, spreading the floor to get open lanes for Fa‘asoa and Paez. Roosevelt got no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
It was a fitting way to close the regular season, especially on senior night.
Kaimuki shot 49 percent from the field (19-for-39) and had a slight edge (27-26) over the Rough Riders on the boards.
The Bulldogs finished with 17 turnovers; Roosevelt had 14. The Rough Riders shot 30 percent (13-for-44) from the field.
Kaimuki shot 52 percent from the free-throw line (11-for-21). Roosevelt was 56 percent at the line (9-for-16).
Roosevelt’s opening-round playoff game will be next Thursday.
