Being in Hawaii lucky on any day
Watch out, here comes Jason!
Well, not really, but today is Friday the 13th, which tends to conjure up visions of the hockey-masked fictional character of the slasher film series.
So successful was that horror franchise, in fact, that it spawned 12 movies — in case anyone’s counting.
But back to the 13th: According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, N.C., between 17-21 million Americans are affected by a fear of this day, buying into the superstition that it holds bad luck.
These folks better brace themselves: 2012 holds three Friday the 13ths, the most that can fall in a year. Besides today, the others will be in April and July.
Have a nice day.
Sony Open doesn’t intimidate Oda
Five years after being the second youngest player to make the weekend cut in a PGA tour event — at the Sony Open — at the age of 16, Tadd Fujikawa was given an exemption this week to return to the tournament. He is joined by 15-year-old sophomore John Oda of Moanalua High School, who qualified for the Sony Open last month.
In a qualifying round at the Sony host Waialae Country Club, Oda finished with a 1-under-par 71, commenting afterward, "It’s just a game, you know."
Known for his small size as a partial result of being born three months premature, Fujikawa went pro six months after making the cut at the Sony Open. He has been playing for dollars since then. We’ll see how Oda develops — he is, after all, just getting started.
