Dyrbe Enos drilled four of Kamehameha’s eight first-half 3-pointers as the Warriors overwhelmed a depleted University High squad 68-53 Thursday night at Klum Gym.
Enos, a senior guard, finished with 23 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field. Reserve guard Mana‘o Salvani scored all 12 of his points on 3-pointers.
No. 3-ranked Kamehameha is now 4-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (14-4 overall).
“That was a good victory. It’ll help get us ready for Punahou on Tuesday,” Warriors coach Julian Nakanishi said. “(University) is missing a whole bunch of guys. That’s a way better team than what they showed today. I think they’ll finish in the top five (of the ILH).”
The Warriors denied the Junior Rainbows a second upset in three nights. On Tuesday, UHS stunned No. 5 Maryknoll 62-45 at Klum.
“We kind of stressed it that they’re a good team,” Enos said. “They’re coming out of Division II (last year), but in Hawaii, anybody can play at the next level.”
This time, it was Kamehameha that shot lights out. The Warriors shot 8-for-14 from the 3-point arc in the first half, including all four tries from deep in the second quarter.
As Enos got untracked from long range, the Warriors turned a seesaw game into an 11-point lead. Makoa Camanse-Stevens, Enos and Taylor Taliulu drained consecutive treys, and after Enos hit a 45-foot runner at the buzzer, they led 18-10 entering the second quarter.
A free throw by Makana Harrison and a fast-break layup by Kamai Olowofoyeku capped the 15-2 run, and Kamehameha led 21-10 early in the second quarter.
The Junior ’Bows got a 3-pointer from Cameroon Conant and a layup by Peter Fee to cut the margin to six, but Kamehameha closed out the half with a 16-2 blitz.
UHS had 13 of its 17 turnovers in the first half against Kamehameha’s halfcourt traps, clearly missing several players due to injury. Point guard Gui Aires, who sat out with a flu, was especially missed.
The Junior ’Bows also were without their most-skilled big man in 6-4 senior Nalu O’Connor, who was sidelined.
Down by 22 in the third quarter, University cut the lead to 54-40 midway through the final quarter after four points in a row by Fee (13 points, five blocks).
Nakanishi called timeout with 4:34 remaining, reinserted his starters, and the Warriors ran the lead back up to 20.
“They are very well coached with an established defensive system, great shooters and Dyrbe is the best player in the state this year,” UHS coach Walt Quitan said.
Makena Suan-Rothenberg scored 15 of his 22 points after halftime for the Junior ’Bows, who dropped to 2-2 in league play (13-5 overall). Guard Anthony Canencia had eight points and eight assists.
“That’s been the story of our season,” Quitan said. “Every time we take a step forward, with the injuries and today having our best ballhandler (Aires) out against Kamehameha, it was tough to overcome. Against pressure, he attacks pressure and makes plays for us. We got tentative against the press. Anthony did a good job, but he couldn’t do it alone.”
Zerin Parker had a team-high seven rebounds for Kamehameha, which outboarded University 24-21. The Jr. ’Bows had just three offensive boards.
Kamehameha shot 48 percent from the field (26-for-54), including 11-for-21 from the arc. University shot 49 percent from the field (20-for-41).
Conant led UHS on the boards with six.
University’s next game is at home (Klum) against Saint Louis on Saturday.
Kamehameha will host Punahou on Tuesday.
