Wahine volleyball stars honored
Volleyball magazine honored two Hawaii players on its All-America teams in this month’s issue.
Senior outside hitter Kanani Danielson was named to the first team, while sophomore hitter-middle Emily Hartong made the third team.
Also, the Rainbow Wahine’s Jane Croson was one of four considered for Freshman of the Year by the magazine. The honor went to Texas’ Haley Eckerman, while Croson, Penn State’s Micha Hancock and Washington’s Krista Vansant were named honorable mention.
UH baseball team to hold celebration
The 10th annual University of Hawaii Baseball Grand Slam Celebration will be held Feb. 13 at the Stan Sheriff Center at 5:30 p.m.
Heavy pupus and drinks will be available, with musical entertainment and live and silent auctions.
Fans will have a chance to meet the UH baseball players and coaches.
The cost is $1,000 to sponsor a table of 10 seats, and individual tickets are $100.

Seabury Hall runner honored by Gatorade
Seabury Hall’s Dakota Grossman won her second consecutive Gatorade Hawaii Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year Award.
Grossman, a sophomore, repeated as individual state cross country champion on Oct. 29, finishing the 3-mile course at Kapalua Village in 19:27.5.
The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.
Grossman has a 3.77 grade-point average, has volunteered for charity road races and serves on her school’s student council.
She now is eligible for the national award.
Chaminade men top Academy of Art
Matt Cousins scored 20 points and Lee Bailey added 19 as Chaminade beat Academy of Art 89-83 in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday at McCabe gym.
Rickey Clayborn had 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for Chaminade (5-5, 3-0).
William Overton Jr. scored 26 points for Academy of Art (2-12, 0-4).
Top seed advances at Challenger wild card
Top seed Dennis Lajola defeated Mark Keil 6-3, 6-0 in a round-of-16 match Thursday in the Honolulu Challenger Wild Card Tournament at Kailua Racquet Club.
Lajola is a University of Hawaii alum from Aiea.
The three other seeded players also advanced: No. 2 Roberto Cid, No. 3 Petr Michnev and No. 4 Rong Ma.
The winner of the event earns a main-event entry into the Honolulu Challenge to be held Jan. 22 to 29 at KRC.
