Lajola and Cid advance to wild-card final
Dennis Lajola defeated Rong Ma 6-1, 6-2 on Saturday at Kailua Racquet Club to advance to the Honolulu Challenger Wild Card Tournament final.
He’ll play Roberto Cid, who beat Petr Michnev 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the other semifinal Saturday.
Lajola and Cid play today in the final, with the winner going on to the main draw of the upcoming Honolulu Challenger.
Chaminade tips UHH in basketball
Lee Bailey scored 24 points and Bennie Murray added 20 as Chaminade beat host Hawaii-Hilo 92-89 on Saturday in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game.
Hilo’s CJ Brown hit a 3-pointer with 53 seconds remaining to cut Chaminade’s lead to 90-89. The Silverswords’ Waly Coulibaly hit a pair of free throws with 3 seconds remaining for the final margin.
Ale leads BYUH past Academy of Art
Junior Ale had 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Bracken Funk contributed 18 points as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Academy of Art 76-56 in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Cannon Activities Center.
Jet Chang scored 12 points for the Seasiders, who outscored the Urban Knights 44-27 in the second half.
Hawaii-Hilo tops Chaminade in hoops
Shanon Rousseau scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 61-32 women’s basketball victory over Chaminade on Saturday in hilo.
Rhani Kaneaiakala led the Silverswords with seven points and six rebounds.

Alisa Griggs and Lorraine Etchell scored 18 points each for the Urban Knights. Shayla Washington scored 21 with 10 rebounds for the Seasiders.
Jimenez breaks UH record in 600 meters
University of Hawaii junior Ashlee Jimenez set a school record in the 600 meters Saturday, finishing in 1:38.57 during the University of Washington Indoor Preview at Seattle.
Jimenez, of Lihue, broke the previous record of 1:38.95 set by Ashley Monfort in 2007. Jimenez finished eighth in Saturday’s race.
Also Saturday, Hawaii senior TeRina Keenan placed second in the shot put (47 feet, 9 inches) and senior Madara Apine finished third in the triple jump (39-7.75).
Mississippi State blanks UH in tennis
Mississippi State defeated Hawaii 7-0 in men’s tennis on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Artem Iluyshin, Louis Cant, James Chaudry, George Coupland, Zach White and Ethan Wilkinson all won singles and doubles matches for the Bulldogs.
Chun places fourth in Mongolia
Hawaii’s Clarissa Chun placed fourth in the 105.5-pound division at the Mongolia Open on Saturday.
Chun opened the tournament with two wins, but lost in the semifinals and in the third-place match.
