Woman dies after vehicle plunges off road
A woman died Monday after the vehicle she was in went off the side of Hana Highway and dropped 25 feet in a rural area near Hana, Maui police said.
Police Lt. Wayne Ibarra said the woman was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
A man who was also in the vehicle was injured but was not in critical condition, Ibarra said.
He said the accident in Nahiku occurred close to 3:45 p.m. and that Maui traffic officers were conducting an investigation.
Subject of SWAT action turns up safe
A man whom police were searching for since he was last seen before a police SWAT unit surrounded the Taco Del Mar in Waipio Thursday turned up safe at his home Sunday night.
The SWAT team was called out to the restaurant Thursday after a report that the owner had barricaded himself inside at about 5:04 p.m.
Police said 41-year-old Douglas K. Young was last seen at the restaurant at about 4 p.m. Thursday and had been depressed.
However, negotiators were unable to contact anyone in the building, and when they entered several hours later, no one was inside.
Police issued a CrimeStoppers alert Sunday night seeking information on Young’s whereabouts. After the bulletin went out, police said, Young’s roommate found Young in good condition at their home at about 10 p.m. Sunday night.
