The 74-year-old female passenger on a mo-ped was in critical condition following a crash in Waipahu Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred on Hoaeae Street just south of Honowai Street about 9:20 a.m.
Police said the blue mo-ped, driven by a 78-year-old man, was traveling south on Hoaeae when the driver apparently lost control and crashed. The passenger was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center with critical head injuries, police said. The man was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Neither the man nor the woman was wearing a helmet, police said.
Attempt to buy ammunition leads to arrest
An Ewa Beach man who walked into a Kakaako gun shop hoping to buy bullets got more than he bargained for Tuesday when he was arrested for allegedly being a felon in possession of a handgun.
Police said the man, 23, of an Aawa Drive address, walked into Magnum Firearms and Range on Queen Street about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday and asked an employee if he could purchase ammunition.
When the employee asked the man if he had the weapon with him, the man went to his vehicle to get his gun, police said. When the employee asked if he was allowed to own a gun, the man said he was a felon, police said. An off-duty sheriff overheard the conversation and detained the man until police arrived, police said.
The man was arrested and is being held pending charges on three weapons-related counts.
