Alex Masaquel couldn’t be on the court with her ‘Iolani teammates, but still found a way to give the Raiders a boost Wednesday night.
Masaquel, who suffered a broken leg in ‘Iolani’s previous game, surprised the team by popping into the pregame meeting. Spurred by the visit, the second-ranked Raiders then ran past No. 6 Kamehameha 52-43 to remain undefeated in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball standings.
“This is a very close team, so having Alex here really inspired our girls and they play for her,” ‘Iolani head coach Eddie Maruyama said. “It was nice to have her here. The girls were excited to see her.”
Masaquel, a junior forward, had surgery over the weekend after injuring her lower leg in the Raiders’ win against Punahou last Friday. She’s been out of school this week and told her teammates she wouldn’t make it to the gym for the game against the Warriors.
“She told us she wasn’t going to come and then she showed up and it was really an energy booster for us because she’s big part of our team,” ‘Iolani guard Kylie Maeda said.
With Masaquel watching from the stands, her leg in a cast and propped up on a pillow, the Raiders (9-0) ran out to a double-digit lead, weathered a Kamehameha rally and did enough from the free-throw line late to hold off the Warriors (4-5).
“I really like watching them play, they played good tonight,” Masaquel said. “I want to be here to support them. I’ll be here every single game.”
Saphyre Rezentes scored 13 of her game-high 15 points in the first half, and forward Jade Botelho finished with 12 and Maeda contributed 11 while running the point.
“Any good team wants to have nice balance offensively and defensively. I thought we spread the ball around tonight, played good team basketball,” Maruyama said.
Alohi Robins-Hardy came off the bench to lead Kamehameha with 14 points, but turnovers hampered the Warriors’ comeback bid.
“We knew exactly what they were going to do, we prepared for it, we did a good job of breaking the press, but then we threw the ball away,” Kamehameha coach Darold Imanaka said. “And we gave them too many free throws. Credit to them, they shot the ball well.”
‘Iolani took control early, opening a 12-2 lead when Rezentes hit a 3-pointer while being fouled and made the ensuing free throw. Kamehameha battled back and took a 16-15 lead after scoring the first six points of the second quarter. But Rezentes scored on a layup off an assist from Maeda to spark an 11-1 run and the Raiders didn’t trail again.
Abrianna Johnson-Edwards’ jumper in the lane with 6:10 left in the fourth quarter gave ‘Iolani a 45-32 lead and was the Raiders’ last field goal of the game. They went 6-for-10 from the free-throw line to close out the win.
“At the end, we didn’t really do what we were supposed to do, but it was a learning experience so it’s good to get the kinks out now,” Maeda said.
