Gymnastics in Paradise meet set
An international field of some 300 female gymnasts is competing in the three-day Gymnastics in Paradise Invitational, starting today at Aiea District Park gym.
Athletes from Hawaii, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Oregon and Washington will compete in uneven bars, floor exercise, balance beam and vault at the event hosted by Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics.
Level 7 gymnasts compete at 5 p.m. today. Saturday’s sessions are at 8 a.m. (Level 6), 12:30 p.m. (Level 8) and 5 p.m. (Level 9-10). Sunday’s sessions are 8 a.m. (Level 5) and 11:30 a.m., Level 4).
Among those competing in Saturday’s late session are defending national beam champion Jenny Frowein, who has committed to attend Stanford, and Tamara Rapp, who is heading to Sacramento State. Both represent Hawaiian Island Twisters.

Hyatt named top young referee
Waialua’s Genie Hyatt was named the female young referee of the year for Region IV by US Youth Soccer.
Hyatt is a Grade 8 official who represented Hawaii at last year’s US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships. She is one of four females in contention for the national award that will be announced at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, Feb. 17, in Boston. On the web: usyouthsoccer.org
SUP World Tour opener close
Maui’s Kai Lenny begins defense of his Stand Up World Tour title with the Sunset Beach Pro, Feb. 4-14, at Turtle Bay Resort. Among the Feb. 4 events are the women’s competition and Na Kama Kai’s youth challenge race and clinic for underprivileged youth. The holding period for the men’s event is Feb. 5-14. Spring season for futsal league
Registration for the Hawaii Futsal League’s spring season has opened. The league begins March 17 with play on Saturdays. Futsal is 5-on-5 soccer that emphasizes ball control and speed of play. On the web: Hawaiistreetsoccer.com
808 Boyz win flag football title
The Palolo-based 808 Boyz won the U11 division at the NFL Flag Football National Championships by beating Cincinnati 27-13 on Saturday at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The team qualified for the national championships by winning the regional title in Houston in mid-December.
The 808 Boyz were coached by Jacob DeLaura. The team members are Jayden DeLaura, Andrei Iosivas, Ka‘ua Nishigaya, Koali Nishigaya, Ray Rocky Ramones, Zachary Sagayaga and Noah Schachtel.
Highlights of the final will air on ESPN in April.
