Bill Tapia: The uke master

    WDA UKULELE - Bill "The Duke of Uke" Tapia, played his ukulele at the 39th annual Ukulele Festival at Kapiolani Regional Park on Sunday. Tapia, 101 years old, is preparing to embark on an eight show tour of Japan which includes the Aloha Yokohama Festival. Tapia bought his first ukulele for .75-c at the age of seven, played for World War I troops during a 1918 United Service Organizations show, taught celebrities such as Shirley Temple and Jimmy Durante how to play the ukulele and continues to teach students to this day. The festival also included, vendors, food, demonstrations and performances by an ukulele orchestra of keiki students, Jake Shimabukuro, Manoa DNA, Yuji Igarashi, "Kolohe" Imamura, Ohta-san, Nicholas Acosta and more.
