‘Iolani completed an undefeated run through the Interscholastic League of Honolulu’s girls soccer season on Saturday.
The Raiders will have to wait until Tuesday to find out whether that was enough to win them a league championship.
‘Iolani closed the ILH schedule with a 6-0 win over Pac-Five at Eddie Hamada Field on Saturday afternoon to finish at 9-0-3 and secure a spot in the Division I state tournament.
Teams are awarded three points per win and one for a tie, giving ‘Iolani 30 to idle Kamehameha’s 28. So the ILH Division I title will be determined Tuesday when Kamehameha (9-1-1) closes the regular season at Punahou.
A Punahou win or tie gives ‘Iolani the title and the ILH’s seeded berth in the state tournament, putting the Raiders in the unusual position of pulling for the rival Buffanblu.
"Whoever thought we’d be cheering for Punahou?" ‘Iolani coach Kristin Masunaga said. "But we’ll be cheering for Punahou on Tuesday."
Along with adding a banner to hang in the gym, the league championship also comes with a bye in the opening round of the four-day state tournament. A year ago, ‘Iolani endured three tournament matches before meeting top-seeded Punahou in the state final and lost 2-1.
"Last year we realized the importance of (the bye)," Masunaga said. "Going into that last game they had one game less than we did. I think that makes a big difference."
Finishing one goal short of the state crown last year continues to push the Raiders, who can now focus on the state tournament after closing the regular season with a 2-1 comeback win over Mid-Pacific last Tuesday and Saturday’s victory over Pac-Five.
"That’s our motivation," Raiders junior Kama Pascua said. "We want to make it to the finals again and win."
‘Iolani and Pac-Five played to a 1-1 tie in their first meeting of the season on Dec. 23. This time the Raiders controlled possession throughout the first half, and broke through about 24 minutes into the match when Nikki Mitsuyasu punched in a shot from the left side.
Pascua then contributed to three more goals over the last 15 minutes of the half. She lofted a throw-in that led Shaye Villanueva past her defender and gave her a clean shot into the left side of the net. Pascua finished the job herself on ‘Iolani’s next two goals, tapping in a rebound off the post and converting on a 1-on-1 opportunity to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead at halftime.
The Raiders continued the assault in the second half, with Sam Dacanay and Twyla Hamasaki adding the final two goals.
