Man, 77, is badly injured in mo-ped crash
A 77-year-old Aiea man was in critical condition Tuesday after crashing his mo-ped in Aiea, police said.
Police said the man lost control of the late-model mo-ped, drove into a curb and was thrown from the vehicle at about 2:15 p.m. on Kaonohi Street near Kahapili Street.
He was not wearing a helmet, and speed was a possible factor, police said.
Paramedics took him to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.
It was the second critical crash involving seniors on a mo-ped this month.
Eufemia Miranda, 74, was fatally injured while riding as a passenger on a mo-ped on Jan. 18 in Waipahu. The driver, believed to be her husband, lost control of the mo-ped, which then crashed. Neither Miranda nor the driver was wearing a helmet. Miranda hit her head on the asphalt and died that night at the Queen’s Medical Center. The driver was slightly injured.
Sheriff Division’s sweep nets 31 arrests
Thirty-nine people were arrested Tuesday during a warrant sweep on Oahu by the state Department of Public Safety’s Sheriff Division.
The arrests came during the quarterly sweep by the division’s Special Operations Section, said Toni Schwartz, department spokeswoman.
She said 31 men and eight women were booked Tuesday morning, and 74 warrants were served — some had multiple warrants — at the division’s booking station on Keawe Street. Of the 74 warrants, 64 were traffic-related, six were for criminal contempt and the remaining were for a grand jury indictment, information charging, a probation violation and a deferred acceptance of guilty plea violation.
Deputy sheriffs brought the arrestees to the police holding cell beginning at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday until they could be processed at the Keawe Street facility.
Schwartz said some of those arrested did not know there were warrants out for their arrests and turned themselves in after authorities called them.

Maui motorcyclist killed in Lahaina crash
A 21-year-old Honokowai motorcyclist was speeding and weaving in and out of heavy traffic Tuesday before he hit a parked truck and was killed in Lahaina, Maui police said.
Wayan Decosta was driving a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle about 80 to 100 mph, weaving between the two Napili-bound lanes on Honoapiilani Highway and the bicycle lane when he tried to pass a van in the slow lane on the right at about 3:35 p.m., police said. He entered the bike lane and hit the rear of a parked truck.
He was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. at the Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet.
Decosta is Maui’s second traffic fatality this year, compared with none at this time last year.
