There was a clear sign wide receiver Greg Jennings of the Green Bay Packers was comfortable being in Hawaii.
During Tuesday’s Pro Bowl news conference at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Jennings flashed the shaka sign.
Jennings said his version was the “hang-loose” sign he learned from California-raised teammates who were inspired by Hawaii’s surf culture.
“We have a ton of Cali guys on the team,” Jennings said. “Anytime you’re around Cali guys, they’re always throwing the hang-loose sign.”
Jennings said the sign made its way into the Packers’ playbook.
“We kind of have the hang-loose sign for one of our routes,” Jennings said. “It’s one of those Cali-swag things you keep in mind.”
Jennings, who completed his sixth NFL season, is making his second consecutive appearance in the Pro Bowl.
He said he is still pained from the Packers’ playoff loss to the New York Giants on Jan. 15. Jennings said being in Hawaii this week is serving as a “soother” to the disappointment of that loss.
Jennings said the players he knows favor the Pro Bowl being played in Hawaii. This is the last year of the current contract between the state and the NFL. The Super Bowl will be played in New Orleans next year. It has not been announced whether the 2013 Pro Bowl also will be held in the Big Easy.
“For myself and other players, the treat of coming here and playing the game, and to experience the environment we’re not accustomed to seeing on a day-to-day basis, is more loved by all of the guys,” Jennings said.
Jennings said holding the Pro Bowl on the weekend between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl is “beneficial to all people.” Through 2009, the Pro Bowl was held the week after the Super Bowl.
In the meantime, Jennings said he is prepared to enjoy this week. He said he has picked up several local phrases.
“You want to be well-versed when you come to a state like this,” Jennings said. “Obviously, we understand what (Hawaii) brings to the table, and we’re excited to be here.”
Jennings said he consulted with Packers teammate Alex Green, a former UH running back.
“He gave me some pointers and some tips,” Jennings said. “His best advice? ‘Eat the local food.’ I’m excited about trying the food.”
The Pro Bowl practices begin today at Kapolei High School. The NFC’s workout begins at 8:45 a.m.; the AFC starts at 10:15 a.m.
