4 to be honored by Junior Achievement
Jay Kadowaki of J. Kadowaki Inc., Daniel B.T. Lau of Finance Factors and Debra Ching Maiava and Ric Maiava of Ken’s House of Pancakes will be inducted into the Junior Achievement of Hawaii Business Hall of Fame.
The ceremony and dinner will be held March 9 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hilton Waikiki Beach. The honoress will join a group of 77 women and men who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since its founding in 1960. A committee comprising Hawaii Business Roundtable, Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, Small Business Hawaii and Hawaii Council on Economic Education selected them.
Past inductees include Paul Loo, Dwayne Steele, Mitch D’Olier, Robin Campaniano, Chatt Wright and Richard Kelley.
Junior Achievement of Hawaii was founded in 1957 to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business and economics.

Aviation career seminar set for Saturday
Delta Air Lines will be holding the Honolulu FltOps.com Focus on the Future sessions for students and parents on Saturday at the Ala Moana Hotel to offer additional opportunities for students seeking a career as a pilot or aviation professional.
Delta is providing two free round-trip tickets for one student and parent to visit a college or university offering aviation and aerospace degrees. A list of approved colleges and universities is available online at www.fltops.com/aviationcolleges.asp.
Professional pilots will be attending the "Expats in Paradise" global pilot hiring fair at the hotel, where they will be attending professional seminars on job placement and interviewing with the hiring personnel from the airlines. Verizon Wireless spends to improve service
Verizon Wireless said it invested more than $41 million in Hawaii last year to provide new wireless services, network coverage and additional capacity for customers.
Verizon Wireless’ network investment in Hawaii now totals more than $295 million since 2000, the company said. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $70 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide networks and to add new services.
In 2011 Verizon Wireless launched its 4G LTE network on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii island.
Seawater system to cool condo towers
Developers of a project that will use cold ocean water to provide air conditioning for downtown buildings said they have signed a major condominium project as a customer.
Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning LLC will provide air conditioning for One Waterfront Towers, the 45-story twin-tower condo near Honolulu Harbor.
"We are pleased to announce another significant milestone in bringing clean, sustainable cooling technology to downtown Honolulu," said Bill Mahlum, Honolulu Seawater president and CEO.
The system will reduce cooling costs for the 310-unit condo and eliminate the need to replace the condo’s chiller, said George Beavin, board president of One Waterfront Towers.
The seawater project is expected to be completed in 2013.
Netflix regains customers in fourth quarter
SAN FRANCISCO » Netflix has regained almost as many customers as it lost after an unpopular price increase, signaling that the video subscription service is healing from its self-inflicted wounds.
Fourth-quarter figures released Wednesday show Netflix Inc. ended December with 24.4 million U.S. subscribers, up from 23.8 million at the end of September. The gain of about 600,000 customers compares with the 800,000 subscribers lost last summer after the company raised its U.S. prices as much as 60 percent.

Central Pacific Bank has donated $49,145 of materials to Habitat for Humanity and ReUse Hawaii. Materials include door thresholds, medicine cabinets, granite countertops and doorknobs, which will be used for future building projects.
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded $1.1 million to support ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center’s mobile science laboratory. The grant will help to construct and design the mobile science unit; develop training, curriculum and staffing plans; transport and operate the lab across the Hawaiian islands; and evaluate the effectiveness of the project.
